CentOS 7 End-of-Life: Don’t panic!

Customers using the cPanel control panel with their hosting services may have seen a warning recently, telling them that the CentOS 7 operating system will be going “End of Life” next year, in June 2024.

Messages like this can seem scary, raising concerns of no longer receiving updates or having to go through a painful upgrade process, but there’s no need to worry- Prostack has you covered. Read on to find out what we’re doing.

Moving to AlmaLinux 8

Going forward, all new cPanel services will use AlmaLinux 8. AlmaLinux is an open-source, CentOS-based enterprise operating system and is the recommended OS for use with the cPanel control panel. We’ve been carrying out extensive compatibility testing and are pleased to be rolling this out as of a few weeks ago.

What about existing servers?

We know that uptime is critical for your sites, and therefore you want to keep disruption to a minimum when upgrading to a new operating system. Thankfully, a solution exists- cPanel’s Elevate Project. This project is aimed at providing an in-place upgrade path to AlmaLinux 8, making the transition smooth and seamless.

The upgrade process involves minimal downtime (just a couple of reboots). We’ve been carrying out internal testing and although we’re not quite there yet, we are confident that we’ll be able to offer scheduled upgrades to customers well in advance of the EOL date. There’s plenty of time for this- CentOS 7 goes End Of Life on June 30th, 2024.

Do I need to do anything?

If you’re using an old PHP version (before 7.2) you should look at upgrading this as soon as possible- AlmaLinux does not support old versions of PHP. In any case, PHP before 7.4 is already end of life. Most common web applications, such as WordPress and Magento, will support PHP 8.

If you need support for older PHP versions and upgrading is not an option for you, get in touch and we may be able to provide a solution.
